Cycling Cypress

Cycling in the Cypress Hills

The Cycling Season

Weather patterns in southwest Saskatchewan are unique. With the highest temperatures in the province and the lowest amount of precipitation, cycling in the Cypress region persists well into November and sometimes December. In the spring, it is common to begin road cycling in April.

The Road

The roads leading to the Cypress Hills from Maple Creek are an excellent training ground for road cyclists. Light traffic, wide shoulders, and a series of hills, the road to Fort Walsh provides the opportunity to practice climbing, interval training, or go for a longer ride.

Maple Creek is 750 metres above sea level, making it 180 metres higher than Regina and 250 metres higher than Saskatoon. Better yet, the roads leading south toward Fort Walsh and Cypress Hills steadily rise to over 1000 metres, and culminates at 1275 metres at the highest point in the Cypress Hills Park. The elevation change provides riders with an opportunity to use elevation to enhance oxygen carrying capacity and improve performance.

Off the Road

Cypress Hills Provincial Park has a network of singletrack trails that take you through many scenic parts of the Park.

The Trans Canada Trail can be accessed at the eastern edge of the Cypress Hills Park. There are several offshoots from the main trail, giving cyclists an opportunity to explore the richness of the Cypress Hills. The trail is suitable for a variety of skill levels and can be used for exploring or getting a good mountain bike workout.

Unlike many mountainous areas, the terrain at Cypress Hills Provincial Park is usable and accessible.

Cycle Touring

In the spring and summer, hundreds of cyclists pass by Maple Creek on their way across Canada. In the past, the area between Regina and Calgary has been the largest unsupported cycling area along the entire Trans Canada Highway. Cypress cycle can provide touring cyclists with the assurance that there is a reliable and experienced mechanic available while passing through this gap. The store provides bicycle parts, accessories, and service, directions to local accommodations, and a dose of Saskatchewan hospitality on the journey through the region. Don't be surprised if we ask to take your picture!
